For three months, Public Assembly director Lynda Roberts occupied our site with Daisy the van, to have conversations around working in the public with the public. This version of Public Field Office is part of Lynda’s PhD research, reflecting on public art programming and doing art in public. During the residency, for practically every day the site was open, so were Daisy’s back doors, inviting anyone and everyone to take a seat and share some thoughts about the place of art in civic life, agency in public space, and how to build a closer community through creative practice. Lynda spoke, and wrote, and read, and mapped, and sometimes just sat and thought — a welcome energy on site and a timely provocation to the arts community to think about their place in the broader fabric of things.

A key part of the residency was transforming Daisy into an art object in her own right — a charismatic object to engage people in the bigger project happening inside. So over the three months, the familiar shape of the ice-cream van was painted, sanded, taped, and tweaked to display a series of grids referencing key aspects of Lynda’s practice, and becoming a beautiful curiosity for taking to the streets.

Public Field Office will be travelling around the City of Melbourne and surrounds for months to come, returning to Testing Grounds to end the research process and present findings of Lynda’s work in May and June 2019…
