Animal/God — Workshop
Javanese inspired Trance dance Workshops
“Animality is an exercise” — M. Foucault
The practice of animality is an exercise as stated by M. Foucault. This workshop is a unique combination of the Javanese tradition of bull trance dance and court dance experimentations. It is a personal form of dance that defines a genre with rich cultural heritage and contemporary possibilities. With a focus on intelligent abandonment of control, it takes place in an environment that encourages improved improvisation in contradicting spaces.
The workshop is open to 15 participants who are interested in drawing inspiration from the ecstatic trances of animals and deities in Indonesia. Together with experienced trance practitioners and masters Agus Riyanto, Agung Gunawan, and Tony Yap, we will explore and reinterpret these traditional forms, delving into the intensity of “becoming animal” and “becoming god” while reflecting on our own human sense of being.
4-day workshop and performance from 16-18 November 2023 @ 5.30pm – 8pm (Sold out)
Performance Sunday 19 November at 1pm (Open to the public)
