Testing Grounds

If you are deaf, hearing-impaired, or speech-impaired, we ask that you call us via the National Relay Service. Alternatively contact us via email.

Q.

How do I apply to use Testing Grounds? Whats the process?

A.

Because Testing Grounds is an interdisciplinary art space first and foremost and our programming structure means the site is rarely if ever able to be booked in its entirety, the application process involves some negotiation between the hirer, Testing Grounds, and creative practice using the site.

We recommend getting in touch with us via email to check availability, or you can simply fill out a Commercial Hire Application Form and we’ll be in touch.

Q.

I have some questions before I apply.

A.

The answer may be in these FAQs but if you cannot find it here you can email testing-grounds@theprojects.com.au. You can always visit us on site as well.

Q.

What spaces are available?

A.

There are a range of spaces available suiting different scales and types of events. We strongly encourage you to come down and have a look before submitting an application.  You can also view the site via the 360 walk through

Q.

Can I have exclusive use of the site?

A.

As a commercial hire you may negotiate exclusive use of the site, in the sense of being closed to the general public, but it is rare the whole site – Box spaces and the grounds – are all available for use at one time. Depending on what else is programmed at the time, some parts of the site may be closed for artist use.

Q.

Does Testing Grounds provide an event management service?

A.

We can certainly help you set up, manage access to site for bump-in and bump-out, and help with basic tech setup, but we are a small team so for larger events or bigger setups, (e.g. ticketing, decorating the space, security, or catering), we can put you in touch with excellent people who know the site and will make your event outstanding – just let us know what you envisage and we can direct you to the right people.

Q.

Is the site licensed?

A.

Yes.

Q.

Can I bring alcohol on site?

A.

No. Please keep in mind that proceeds from the bar support the residency program – it’s ethical drinking!

Q.

Do you have food or catering?

A.

We don’t have any kitchen or capacity to do catering ourselves, but have a range of terrific food truck vendors and caterers we’ve worked with in the past and highly recommend. We can put you in touch if you let us know what kind of thing you’re after.

Q.

Do you have power?

A.

We have 240 volt power and three phase if required.

Q.

How much power can I draw?

A.

Generally we have 10amp 240v supply.

Q.

Do things need to be tested and tagged?

A.

Yes, but we have a range of AV gear on site that may be available depending on what else is programmed at the time. We can let you know availability at the time of your enquiry. If our in-house gear is being used, we can put you in touch with some hire companies that will have tested and tagged gear for hire.

Q.

Does the site have flat access?

A.

Yes.

Q.

Amenities?

A.

We have unisex and flat access toilets on site.

Q.

Can I bring my car on site?

A.

For bumping in and out, sure. Otherwise there is a car park next door. If you can please let us know prior to arriving so we can make sure the site is clear.

Q.

What lighting do you have on site?

A.

Each space comes with ceiling lights and we have a limited range of simple indoor can lights. Any lighting requirements beyond a simple evening wash of the space will need to be organised by the hirer, but we can put you in touch with recommended hirers.

Q.

Is there a limit on light pollution?

A.

We have a number of residential towers close to Testing Grounds and we are respectful of our neighbours, so we try and keep light spill to a minimum.

Q.

Am I able to store objects on site?

A.

We have drop-off points for short storage while events are being installed/deinstalled. Generally if you want to store items for the duration of the event you should find space within the specific space provided to you.

Q.

Can we advertise ourselves?

A.

You most certainly can – this is your event and you are in charge.

Q.

What happens if it rains?

A.

It rains! (But surprisingly it doesn’t actually rain that often) There are some indoor spaces but generally we are an outdoor space so its always good to have a contingency plan up your sleeve. Unfortunately site hire fees are non-refundable in case of inclement weather.

Q.

Is there security provided?

A.

If your event is of a scale and size that you need security, we can put you in touch with recommended providers.

Q.

Am I able to record video or sound and take photographs?

A.

Sure thing!

Q.

Is there first aid on site?

A.

Yes. But please be careful!

Q.

Do I need to bring a ladder for install?

A.

We two extendable step ladders and one safety ladder on site.

Q.

How will I get to know the ins and out of the site?

A.

We’ll get you down for a site induction a few weeks before your event. This is to talk you through site safety issues and access, but also is an excellent chance to talk through logistics and problem solve before the problems arise! We’ll get in touch to arrange this at a time that suits once your booking is confirmed.
