Help Desk: Virtual Professional Development Program

Welcome to Help Desk.

This is a virtual portal that helps you develop your professional creative practice. Simply submit an enquiry via the online form, telling us what you would like help with, and one of our friendly creative mentors will contact you for a 40-minute virtual meeting, where you can pick their brains and get experienced industry advice- for free!

Help Desk is open from the 15th of June – 7th of August and operates on a first-in, best-dressed policy. So get in touch now, before the program opens, to secure yourself a meeting.

This program is open to all creative disciplines and can assist with almost anything;

  • Negotiating contracts and writing agreements
  • Forming relationships with galleries, festivals and presenters
  • Documenting and archiving projects and up-keeping websites.
  • Pitching, touring (metropolitan and regional) and writing proposals
  • Tips for running your practice as a small business
  • Navigating institutions, museums
  • Advocating or the arts
  • Strategic planning for artists
  • Cultural protocol and first nations representation
  • Budgets, acquittals and what to do next
  • Mental health, resilience and balancing work/life
  • Providing critical feedback on creative work

Whatever it is, Help Desk is here to help you develop the tools you need for your creative practice to thrive in this turbulent world.

Meet our Creative Mentors

Erin Milne
Erin Milne is an independent producer whose practice, Bureau of Works, is deeply driven by a passion for contemporary and experimental art that speaks to the here and now. Erin is also a producing and curatorial associate of Experimenta Media Arts and Punctum Live Arts and sessional lecturer at Deakin University.

Jedda Andrews
Jedda Andrews is a Producer, Creative Producer and Project Manager with a particular passion for assisting young women in the creative industries and supporting people with language and learning issues. Jedda co-founded ‘Ian Strange Studio’ with visual artist Ian Strange, whom she has been working with for over a decade.

Erica McCalman
Erica McCalman is a producer, project and production manager with Ballardong (Noongar), Irish convict, Scottish, and Cornish heritage. Her production credits include works within Melbourne Fringe, Melbourne International Comedy Festival, Adelaide Festival and Brisbane Festival.

Dorcas Maphakela
Dorcas Maphakela is a TV Presenter, speaker and award-winning founder & producer of OZ AFRICAN TV (OATV). Creative producer for One Beat One Love Festival (forming part of the VMC’s Cultural Diversity Week) she also works for AIME Mentoring as Program Manager, working with high school students of African and Indigenous descent, university students and community mentors to help bridge the gap of inequality through education.
